“The Glass Menagerie” By Tennessee Williams
The play “The Glass Menagerie is one of famous play in the world that had won New York Drama Critics Circle Award in 1945. It was performed in Chicago in 1944. It was very good theater, I think. After I read this drama, something through in my mind is a weird thing. This drama is very long, but it is four-character play.
The four characters of this drama are :
1. Laura Wingfield is slightly crippled, extra sensitive mental condition,and shy.
2. Tom Wingfield is Amanda’s son. He works at warehouse and want to be a writer
3. Jim O’Connor is Tom’s workmate at shoe factory. He is also Laura’s friend at High School. Tom invites him to Wingfield’s house and hope him to be Laura’s gentleman caller.
4. Amanda Wingfield is Tom and Laura’s mother. She is a single parent.
5. Mr. Wingfield is Tom and Laura’s father. But in this play, he is a minor character because he is only showed as photograph hung in the wall, but he is often referred to.
I saw in this play, Amanda as Tom and Laura’s mother need to rise up her family alone without her husband besides her. She is getting hard to do that, but with Tom’s help, she revolt from her condition as single parent and together with her son, they pass their life. Laura is a crippled and shy woman who wants to get a husband, but she is too shy to do that. So, her mother (Amanda) and Tom make a plan to give her the first gentleman caller. Thus, Tom decides to invite his workmate Jim O’Connor to his house. And Jim accepts it.
When Jim comes to Wingfield’s house, Amanda treats him as the first gentleman caller for Laura. Amanda and Tom leave them in the living room with candle light. It is so romantic. But, when Laura begins to love him, Jim say, he had engaged and to be married. Laura gets sad and Amanda try to make her happy over again. But, she can't do it, she ask Laura to blow the candle out. Laura blow the candle and say good bye.
From this summary, I can realize and imagine how hard Amanda to through her life and her children (Tom and Laura) without her husband. and also Laura is crippled. Only Tom is her expectation. I think, I got some messages when I read this drama :
1. In life, we have to be strong in all conditions.
2. Do not be afraid to do something impossible according to people
3. We have to keep living although our surround conditions are troubled
4. A son can cover a father if father is never been back forever
And not only the messages that I had gotten, but I think the theme of “The Glass Menagerie is about people make decisions for themselves that affect others and yearns themselves. I got this in my mind because I think, we should know what we want to get, where we want to go and why we live. If we know all of our purpose we can decide it as it is performed in the play “The Glass Menagerie”.
The drama “Sketsa Robot” by I. Yudhi Sunarto which is performed at Taman Ismail Marzuki contained with criticisms, advices, and conflicts which is happening in Indonesia Country. At the beginning of the drama, it talked about a family who had been married, but his wife did not want a child born from her womb. Thus, they decided to buy a small robot (Lolita) and they call the robot as their child. And then her husband that has big lust of sex changed his child’s program into S3X program. A program is designed specifically to serve the human lust of sex whenever they want to do it. Hence from that, during his wife’s assignment on abroad, he makes a love with robot (his child) freely.
As we know, robot can be called an object that is created, designed, and programmed by the human where the robot programming based on the behaviors of the human daily activities. Thus, robot is designed to imitate the behaviors, attitudes, and actions taken by the humans. However, robot is not as perfect as the humans. The humans can changeable in second time, but robot is not designed to change its programs automatically. It behaves on the program that exists in the body of robot. From here, we can conclude that the humans who is destined to get descendant, but they against their destiny. If that, it useless to know the provision that human being is created in pairs and they have to establish a relationship. We called marriage. And also, robot had created variously. In this case, we talk about S3X robot that serve all you guys in field of sex. If this robot is really designed in the real life, where are the morals and ethics of the creator?
The next conflict I had seen when it performed is criticisms and problems which are happening in education world especially in Indonesia country. In this context, the conflict that is depicted in this performing associated with education world is MONEY. Money is everything. Money becomes a world main necessity. And whatever can be changed by money. Thus, people who don not have money in the world will be eliminated slumped in their own world. The conflict that portrayed in this performance is in the scene-the prospective new students want to register in the Universitas Robot Indonesia (URI). At the time of registration, there is one of the new student’s parent ask about fee waiver, but they don’t care about him.
The answer he heard is an unexpected answer. The employees who take care the registration (Mr. Budi and Mr. Yohannes) said that “Mr. Pirman, if you unable to pay for your son’s tuition in this university, please search another university. It shows that what a valuable the money in the eyes of humans. If that, the poor people out there can not get a decent education because education becomes an effective sale material and efficient for the welfare of their family. How poor the unfortunate people in this world. The education becomes a cable to distribute money. Only the rich people can get everything. They can buy whatever they want to buy in this world without care to another. What about the poor people in this world? They will always be oppressed by the rich people. Where is the soul of your humanity? We know, life is not long, but life is stopover to support us, to become us as kind person who understand person. We need to behave according to the rules, ethics, and moral.
Then we saw the immoral scene in this performance “Sketsa Robot”. The scene is in the park between Pernando and Barbra (robot S3X). In this park, Pernando and Barbra made a love at public place. That was really immoral behavior if it happens in the real life. Then not for a long time came a garbage cleaner park. He tried to disturbed them. But, we know that Indonesia country is a country based on the importance, and the importance can be achieved by money. Thus, Pernando came to the cleaner and asked him to go away from the park with bribe him with much money and said, this money is a reward for cleaning the garbage in the park. It is really immoral and unethical act which had seen in this drama.
Then besides doing a sex on public place, it turns out with the sex performance that is conducted by the champion of MTQ competition. The name is Firman. He is Mr. Pirman’s son. We saw that Mr. Pirman had tried hard to enter his son in Universitas Robot Indonesia even appeal to Mr. Rektor to accept Firman as his student, but Firman does not reciprocation. In URI, Firman known as the champion of MTQ made a sex with Barbra. I am sure, all people who watch this scene will think about “it’s useless become the champion of MTQ”. Better you become an ordinary person but you have good manner rather than you become a famous Islam but your behaviors is not Islamic. This behavior had destroyed Islamic moral. How can we respect Islam religion if the immoral behaviors are done by Islam?
Then, we saw the more conflict, the struggled for position that happen between Mr. Budi and Mr. Yohannes. They both are a senior and a junior. However, because Mr. Budi’s greedy that want to control URI and shift Mr. Yohannes position, he becomes greedy with the materials. After we met a beautiful woman, Cassandra, he becomes greedier with materials. He tried to drop out Mr. Yohannes and chased him up from URI. Thus, they both are conflict and hostility. It’s means that “Friend can be enemy and enemy can be disaster for friend”.
But, Mr. Yohannes does not want to beat and tried to arrange a strategy to destroy Mr. Budi’s plan. With Mr. Yohannes’s cleverness and cunning, he hired a hacker and asked him to record something ashamed that Mr. Budi did. Fortunately, at the time it is talking, Mr. Budi invited Barbra and wants her to do sex with him. Mr. Yohannes didn’t miss this opportunity and the hacker set the hidden camera in Mr. Budi’s room.
The next day, Mr. Yohannes took the recording and paid for it 300.000.000 asio. Money again, money again, and money again. The destroying of nation moral. With pride feeling, Mr. Yohannes called Mr. Budi to speak about something (Video Recording). Mr. Budi had came to Mr. Yohannes’s room. He showed the recording to him and Mr. Budi apologized to Mr. Yohannes and said “ the clever person will be stay as clever person”.
From that, we can conclude that “don’t judge all things in the world can be replaced with money. We must improve our behaviors and then we can improve our society’s behaviors and then we can improve our education’s images.
The poetry “Time Is Running Out” by Oodgeroo Noonuccal. In my opinion, this poem is one of the best poems in the world especially in Australia. Oodgeroo Noonuccal formerly called Kath Walker or Kathleen Jean Mary Ruska was born on November 3th, 1920 on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) Queensland, Australia. She was the second youngest of six children from Ted and Lucy Ruska. She was an Australian poet, political activist, artist, and educator. She was also a campaigner for Aboriginal rights. Oodgeroo left her school at age 13, 1933 because she wrote with her left hand. She was the first Australian Aborigine woman who published her book of verse. Her jobs aredomestic servant, corporal, writer, and educator. She had ever worked as Australian Women Army Service and Nonuccal-Nughi Education Cultural Centre. Oodgeroo Nonuccal died on September 16th, 1993 (aged 72). But, during her days, she did a precious thing that can change the differences between black and white communities in the world especially in Australia Country.
According to me, her poem “Time Is Running Out” talked about the destruction of the environment. In this poem, Oodgeroo expressed about what we had done for our environment, did we keep it or destroy it? We need to do something positive for our environment. We might not be able to feel what a beautiful world with beauty of our environment such as beautiful landscape of beach. But, the world made us losing all of it. In fact, the humans use the environment to get money for their life without think of the risk of their behaviors. The entire thing in the world is used for materiality.
In this essay, I want to talk about the important messages that Oodgeroo put in her poem, the figurative language that she used for her poem, and I want to tell you who the poem refers to. I think, this poem is interesting and it can become a lecture and advices for the humans being who apply the environment just for their life.
The First Stanza (The second Paragraph)
The first stanza talk about the people acts. They lived for money. They can conduct everything for money including the destruction of the earth. They destroyed the environment violently. They don’t think about the risk of their behaviors for another. (Stanza one lines 1 and 2).

“His” is refers to men. In this line, the miner is compared to the people in the real life. In this case, they use Metaphor as poetic device. This stanza is also talk about what they can get for their if they destroy the environment such as : they can get advantages like money. They take each elements of the environment such as they cut the trees in the forests illegally and bring them to their company, change the forests that become the lung of the world like the industrial land. They use this land for industrial company to cultivate the trees to be kind of the equipments that become the humans consume it for their daily activities just like this line “stealing, bottling her black blood for the sake of greedy trade” (stanza one lines 3 and 4). “Her” in stanza one is refers to Earth. And then “Black blood” is refers to the oil.
The Second Stanza (The Third Paragraph)
The second stanza related with the first stanza which was talking about the risk of environment destruction. We can see that the world has been spoiling quietly. And who knows about it? People in the world only understand about how I can save my life from suffering. They do everything even damage the environment only for their importance. I quote the line that related with this act.
In his greedy lust for power
He destroys old nature’s will Stanza Two
For the sake of the filthy dollar
He dirties the nest he build
“He destroyed old nature’s will” (stanza two lines 2) is compared with the nature that had been given by the God. He destroyed it for money that can make them happy life and happy ending. But we don’t thinking of the others. As “for the sake of the filthy dollar” (stanza two lines 3) means “money”. They consent their world to be change by the money, money, and money. He destroyed their life and their world. Oh my God. Pardon them. And then when they damaged their environment, they did not know that they damaged their place also. And unexpected thing for them is the crime they made for money will be written down by the God and just in the end of their life for the punishment.
The Third Stanza (The Fourth Paragraph)
But time is running out (stanza three line 1). In this line, Oodgeroo use “symbol” to figure that time in the real life is always running. It interpreted as the time will be over. No one can run away from it. In this stanza, it talks about the punishment for people who had destroyed the earth violently for money. What an upset situation. We need to take over this situation. We must save our earth that had been given by our God. Don’t let someone or a group of people destroy our earth. We give them a lecture and punishment for their behaviors. Remember, all you guys will get the effect for your stand, but you will not know when it happen for you. And for people that take care of the earth just hope, someone will come to us and help us solve this problem just like this line:
Come gentle black man
Show your strength
Time to take a stand Stanza Three
Make the violent miner feel
Your violent
Those lines have strong meaning for evildoer and persuade the people to get back to the God’s way. “Make the violent miner feel your violent” (stanza three lines 8 and 9) shows that the earth know what you had done with it also. Thus, the earth will punish you guys for your behaviors if the time has arrived.
The summary of the poem “Time Is Running Out” (The Fifth Paragraph)
Well, we are in the end of my discussion about this poem. According to me, the poem “Time Is Running Out” by Oodgeroo Nonnuccal is very good poem and has great meaning for me after I read it. This poem was talking about the destruction of the environment dealingto our behaviors especially. It can improve our knowledge about our acts. Do we take over our earth or we destroy it? We can’t understand about it, but we can realize and feel it. Can we feel the environment love us and hence from that, we have to love the environment too, so that it will make a balancing between the earth and us. Well, we don’t need to think about the advantages and the positive effect, but we think about the negative effect that had caused by ourselves. For example, we cut the trees in the forests for company’s importance so that we can get much money for that, and then we burn the forests to be changed as a company to add our money. Everything we do is just for money. I’m afraid about this because not only people can hear this situation but the so does the earth. And the effect for this poem for me,Ithink, I felt what I had done for my environment is wrong. I often throw the rubbish everywhere. It means that I didn’t care with my environment. After I read this poem, something hit me and tells me, you must take over your earth because it is your life all the time. I felt, I need to change my behaviors so that I can save my life and my earth.
